OUR INITIATIVES
"BUILDING THE BLOCK"
COMMUNITY EVENT
The JW Mitchell “Building the Block” Community event will be held each year. The Building the Block Community Event is an excellent opportunity for individuals and families to explore local community resources, and local businesses, participate in fun activities, and engage with organizations and community leaders.
The event is designed for our community members to obtain vital services and information about resources available for education, health, financial wellness, and more.
The attendees for the event will include residents of the Old Towne East District, South of Main Area, and open to all of The City of Columbus. Expected Attendance: 500-700 people.
We look forward to building partnerships with organizations in the community to make this event a success!
MESHACH ORTON YOUTH INITIATIVE
Created to honor the life of Meshach Sir King Orton, son of Wendy Orton and great-grandson of the late Reverend Mitchell, who was tragically murdered in 2017, as a result of a dispute with his girlfriend that involved multiple people.
To promote awareness of intimate partner violence, peer-to-peer relationships, and violence prevention, the J.W. Mitchell CDC may foster partnerships with community organizations to host community conversations and events for youth, young adults, and parents on prevention, safety, relationship building, etc.
MULTI-PURPOSE
CENTER
The James W. Mitchell CDC is dedicated to empowering and supporting our community's youth. Our organization operates out of The City of Zion Church's Multi-Purpose Center.
We believe our multipurpose center is a crucial resource in accomplishing our mission. The multipurpose center is undergoing renovations to become a space for a youth gym, space for community events, private events, and community conversations.
